Some important information in this month’s Update. So here goes…..

1. Meeting Pub Change – Thursday 31st May 2012 at 8pm After many months of discussion, it has been decided that the Current meeting place is no longer suitable for our requirements, the pub has served us well for a number of years but in recent times we have found it difficult to accommodate all members attending the weekly Thursday night social meet at the King William IV. There has been a recent committee meeting in which it has been decided to move to a new Pub just a few miles away in Ripley. So please note that we switch to the Saddlers Arms, Send Marsh Road Woking GU23 6JQ. We have confirmed the new venue with the publican and we start our weekly meetings in the Saddlers Arms on Thursday 31st May 2012 at 8pm.

2. May Club nights and Events – You will see we have two ride outs scheduled this month, both departing at 8pm from the King William (10th and 24th May) and have just one club night down at the King William IV in West Horsley this month on 17th May. The new meeting place every Thursday night starting around 8pm from 31st May, will be the Saddlers Arms - full details on the Pub and how to get there are on our website http://surreytomcc.co.uk/. Our scheduled club nights for May are:-

Thursday 10th - Surrey Tomcc Club Run to The Cricketers, Horsell Birch, Horsell, Woking – Departing from King William IV 8pm
Thursday 17th - Surrey Tomcc Club night at – King William IV 8pm
Thursday 24th - Surrey Tomcc Club Run to King William 4th, Little London – Departing from King William IV 8pm
Thursday 31st – Pub Change:- Surrey Tomcc Club night at the Saddlers Arms, Send Marsh Road Woking GU23 6JQ

3. AGM 7th June – The AGM is only a month away and the date is set for the 7th June at 8pm at the Saddlers Arms. Positions currently held on the committee are that of Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Treasurer, Regalia Officer, Runs Coordinator and communications.. Every position on the committee is up for re-election and it is also hoped that the committee can be expanded to include 4 more members willing to be put forward for a role on the committee. In addition to up to 4 new committee members we particularly need candidates for the roles of Runs Coordinator, Club Secretary and Communications officer. Please consider assisting the club and it’s members in its management through a position on the committee – it’s not too onerous or time intensive but all positions are important in helping dive the club forwards, please consider it. I will circulate the AGM Agenda and minutes from 2012 in next few weeks – but in any event put 7th June in your diary at the Saddlers Arms.

4.London Motorcycle Museum 17th June 2012 - As you all may have seen in the recent Nacelle - To celebrate 110 years of Triumph Motorcycles we the TOMCC have a national club ride into the London Motorcycle Museum (http://www.motorcycle-uk.com/lmm/beginning.html) on Sunday 17th June 2012. (1) The ride in :- Bill Dunn (dunn_william@lilley.com) from the West Middlesex Branch is coordinating the ride into the museum which will set off from the current HQ of the West Middlesex Branch at the North Star Public House, Thornley Mill Road, Iver, Bucks - it is intended to leave the pub at 11am sharp. (2) The Museum:- On arrival at the Museum, entry will be via a pre-purchased wristband at £7 per person or £8 per person 'on the door'... We have arranged to have John Rosamond present who will give a very interesting talk on the end days of the Meridian co-op, we also have a rock and roll band playing and included in the entry fee is entry to the museum and motorcycle displays and a free BBQ.( you must have the wristband tag to obtain the free BBQ ) – (3) Pre-paid wristbands:- I have obtained a large amount of wristbands which are for sale at £7, it is hoped that various Branches will pre-order a batch for their members so that entry into the museum will be far easier on the day. In the near future, I will endeavour to email as many Branches as is possible to inform all of these wristbands but in the interim, please email me at rayds@sky.com if you require the reduced priced entry wristbands. I only have a few hundred at this price so please contact me as soon as possible.

This is a National Event which should be supported by many hundreds of motorcycles on the ride in.... your bike doesn’t have to be a Triumph, so pop along either for the ride in or just pitch up at the Museum from 11am onwards. 1. Bisley rifle range result – The Surrey Tomcc were joined by our good friends from the Mighty South London Branch for a trip to the National Shooting Range at Bisley.... We were guests of the Waverley District Rifle Club under the instructions of David Clarke a NRA qualified instructor. For some this was the very first time we had shot a gun at any time in our lives, but some remember long ago when in they were in the army popping off rounds as part of their service. We had a cracking day together and the consensus was that we must do it again in the near future, and we will soon :-) ; - Although I couldn’t get onto the range whilst live firing was going on, in fact I probably could have but the thought of standing in front I soon bottled it after looking at some of the shooters, I think I made the right decision to stay wellback, but I took around 35 photos of the day which can be seen in a Slideshow – to view go to http://surreytomcc.co.uk/gallery.php

2. 3. Tolworth Bowling Night – Tuesday 10th April – The London branch of the TOMCC have cordially invited any Surrey Tomcc members to a social evening at the Tolworth bowl – obviously ten pin bowing, nothing to serious just a social get together – a few beers, a chat and a few games of ten pin. It may be worthwhile knowing names of us that are going, so please let me know via email and I will let The London Branch (M.S.L.) know numbers etc. If you wish to come along for a laugh (I’m carp at ten pin) then put Tuesday 10th April – meeting at around 730pm at Tolworth Bowl in your diaries and will hopefully see you there

4. Rudgwick August 2012 – Please don’t forget the Rudgwick Steam & Country Show celebrates 26th year in vintage costume on 25th 26th 27th August 2012. We will be having our stand at the show and we will have an extensive array of motorcycles on display, but to do so you will need to complete the attached application form for Each machine you wish to display. The attachment is a PDF file so you will have to print it off and once completed the form must be returned to Sandy as soon as possible.

5. Fins Motorcycles 14th April – A message from Nicola at Fins Motorcycles - Hi There! I thought your members might be interested in this: Charley Boorman takes the Short Way Round to Fins Motorcycles in Redhill Charley Boorman, TV star of Long Way Round & Long Way Down, will be making the short trip to Redhill when he officially opens Fins Motorcycles’ new showroom on 14th April between 12 – 2pm. Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman share a passion for motorcycles and adventure. In 2004 they embarked on their first Long Way Round challenge to ride 20,000 miles across 12 countries. After this epic journey, Ewan and Charley decided to ride 15,000 miles the Long Way Down from John O'Groats, Scotland to the Southern most tip of Africa, Cape Agulhas and then on to Cape Town. So a short trip for Charley to Fins Motorcycles on the Holmthorpe industrial estate, Redhill, is a walk in the park in comparison! Fin Reynolds, owner of Fins Motorcycles said, “We are delighted to welcome Charley to our brand new, spacious showroom. As well as hearing about Charley’s inspiring motorbike adventures we have an exhilarating tyre test day at Silverstone with the Ron Haslam Race School to be won. So come and join us in the fun”. 6. Crouch Inn – Addlestone - Food for thought, a biker friendly pub - My name is Jenni Morris and I am writing to local bike clubs etc to see whether there would be any interest in an idea I have had. I and my husband are big bike fans and I have recently started work at a public house (the crouch inn) in Addlestone surrey. It’s a sports orientated bar with the big screens etc and I want to encourage my bosses (who are non-bikers) to concentrate on this coming moto GP and superbikes season with the idea (loosely based at the moment) of offering a quality breakfast at a discounted price for anyone who turns up on a bike (and any passengers) on any Sunday morning of each moto GP race, as a supplement if you like , to their Sunday ride out. if it proved popular this could be designated to every Sunday. I personally would like to see more bikers turning up to the pub, as I share the same mentality and enjoy the good company that they bring, so I want to encourage that as much as possible , so please note that we have several rooms above the premises which are bed and breakfast so please pass this info on to your members in case it might be of use to them.

8.Haslemere Fire Station Motorcycle Event 22nd April - Just to let you all know that the next event, the 2012 'Ready to Ride' Safer Motorcycling Show will again be taking place on Sunday 22nd of April 2012 at Haslemere Fire Station, West Street, Haslemere, Surrey, GU27 2AP. This is actually the 10th motorcycling event that they have organised and all are welcome to come along. As in previous years, if you are on a ride-out that day why not pop-in for a while, have a look around, grab some refreshments and pick up some safety tips before carrying on with your ride-out. Hopefully the weather will be kinder than the September event, those of you that went to the event last April will hopefully recall what a fantastic day it was not only for the glorious sunshine, but the sheer number and quality of the exhibitors that were here and also the very important safety input available to everyone for free. I will pop along- it is a good day out.

1. Rudgwick August 2012 - Rudgwick Steam & Country Show celebrates 26th year in vintage costume on 25th 26th 27th August 2012. This year’s show will bring together a wonderful array of the Great British past and present with stunning exhibits, animals and displays of all kind from all over the country. We will be having our stand at the show and we will have an extensive array of motorcycles on display, but to do so you will need to complete the attached application form for Each machine you wish to display. Please contact me and I will send you a PDF file to print off and once completed the form must be returned to Sandy as soon as possible.

2. Pioneer Run – This year’s pioneer run is set to run this Sunday the 18^th march – in changes to the previous year’s meeting point outside Terry’s house, the venue has been changed to just down the road, meeting at 8am at the Sidlow Bridge Garage on the A217 South of Reigate (venue is virtually next door to the old meeting place). The venue is a great vantage point to view the many incredible vintage and classic motorcycles taking part in the event. It’s a real shame that Terry has moved on, the venue and the Hospitality from Terry over the past years has been most welcome and our Chairman wishes to pass on his gratitude for all Terry has done for the club, and wishes them well for the future.
3. Ride Of Respect – 18^th March – For those not on the pioneer run, This year the Royal British Legion is supporting the Ride Of Respect for this year’s ride on Sunday 18^th March. I have already registered or the event and together with a few Surrey Tomcc members we will set off this Sunday at around 9am to take part in this event. If you wish to join me and my muckers, got to the Ride Of respect website for further details, there is a possibility of registering on the day but ring the phone contact number on the ROR web page for further details –if you are coming, let me know and we will arrange our ride together, perhaps with the Surrey ROR contingent from Rykas at 9am - http://www.rideofrespect.co.uk/site/

3. Bisley Update – The latest from my contact at Bisley - Hi Ray, - I'm in the process of putting together the rota for the day. It probably works best if we split your 16 down into 4's, with 8 in the morning and 8 in the afternoon. Is that ok? That way two can be shooting and the other two in the party can be watching what is going on, learning and taking photographs. The range opens at 08:30, and I am organising 45 minute slots from 08:30 through to 11:30, and then from 13:30 to 16:30. (The range is closed at lunch time (12:30 to 13:30)). Can you find out from your members when they want to come along? Can you give me a list of names and times please? As you probably aware when organising things like this, I will need a £10 deposit from those attending before the end of the week. If you get the list to me by the end of the week say, I'll get you booked in. The cost will be around £15-£20 per 45 minute session (depending on total numbers and also the number of rounds each member shoots.) Look forward to hearing from you soon. Dave

1. MCN Motorcycle Show Excel – Just a brief update on our Triumph Owners Motorcycle Stand at the MCN Motorcycle Show at Excel between 2^nd and 5^th of Feb – We manned the stand as volunteers and it proved to be a busy time for us all. Although the snow and cold weather on Sunday appears to have deterred many from attending the show, wwe were kept extremely busy throughout the four days explaining the club to prospective members and eventually managed to sign up over 60 new members– including 12 new Surrey members, to the TOMCC family, So overall a great display by the TOMCC and a warm welcome to the new Surrey members who we hope to see down one of our club meetings soon..

4.Bisley Ranges – Just a reminder about the possible date down at Bisley Ranges, If you are interested please email me back so that I can add your name to the list and then sort a date out – anyway, the Bisley message is repeated for the benefit of all:-

My contact at the ranges has given me this brief summary of how the day is run:- The way I plan to run the guest days (learning from previous events) is to allocate slots during the morning/afternoon when the guests will get 1-1 tuition with a club instructor, and be given the opportunity to fire the club rifles. The slots will depend on previous shooting experience, for someone who has shot previously, 30 minutes will be sufficient, for someone new to the sport, probably 45 minutes. That way we can give each guest a specific time to turn up, I can organise the instructor, and we can all have a nice time. The cost of a 30 minute session, when we typically fire 12 rounds will be around £12, to cover paying for the range hire, and ammo at £8 for 12 rounds. A second session will just be the cost of the ammo, so £8. These figures will be finalised nearer the date. We should be able to handle 10 of your members in a morning or afternoon session without a problem. It is a great day out and something very different to the normal run of the mill events. Now if that has whetted your appetite and you wish to have a ‘shot’ at this, then please send me an email so I can note your interest and start to get things organised.

6. For Sale – Standard Screen for a Triumph Trophy 900, S registration 1998 model I received this email from someone I spoke to at the MCN motorcycle show – if you are interested please call Chris Direct:

Hello Ray - I spoke to you on the TOMCC stand at Excel on Friday, hope you had a good show and there was lots of interest. I mentioned that I have a standard screen from a Triumph Trophy 900, S registration 1998 model that I’m disposing of. I’d replaced it with a taller screen some years ago and the bike was eventually sold with the larger screen in place. The next and last model Trophy had the same style fairing, but with a larger screen as standard, I think they realised that it needed it for long journeys. Mind you, on Friday I bought a taller screen for my current CBF600S ... so maybe it’s just me! It seems a shame to simply recycle it when someone might be in need of one. I wonder if there is any chance of putting a note in your newsletter or similar. I know they cost over £160 new, so maybe £50? I’m based in Kingston upon Thames, so close to Surrey for collection. MCN Motorcycle Show Excel - Hi all just a quick message to say that I have 2 places still available for the Tomcc Stand at the MCN Motorcycle Show at Excel on Friday 3rd Feb - all your commitment comprises of is a 'stint' of around 3 hours on the Tomcc stand and the rest of the time you can look around the show or go home or eat etc etc - I still await the tickets for the 4 days - but if you’re interested in covering the stand on the Friday- entry is free (saving £20 each) .. open to any Tomcc member. 2. MEPs, Peter Skinner 14th January – Nearly 80 riders including me and Sandy from Surrey Tomcc braved the bitterly cold Saturday morning weather to attend the MEP surgery at P&H Motorcycles in Crawley on 14th January. Peter Skinner, Labour MEP for the South East of England said he really enjoyed the day, and was delighted at the turnout, though surprised that so many of the questions were about EU procedure. He commented on how well informed the MAG members appeared to be and that he's had more mail about biking issues that any other subject. Well done all who attended. We should be able to handle 10 of your members in a morning or afternoon session without a problem. It is a great day out and something very different to the normal run of the mill events. 1.MEPs, Peter Skinner 14th January– (A message from the Motorcycle Action Group (MAG)

I hope it's a good one for you and if we can keep up the pressure from last year, it should be a good one for Riders' Rights too - If you live in the South East of England, I'm pleased to say that one of your MEPs, Peter Skinner, is holding a special 'motorcycle surgery' at P&H Motorcycles in Crawley on 14th January. (P&H Motorcycles Ltd - 61-63 Gatwick Road – Crawley - West Sussex - RH10 9RD ) - As a result of the huge volume of correspondence he has received from riders in his constituency, he has agreed to meet as many as possible on Saturday afternoon (14th Jan) in perhaps the ideal venue, a bike shop. He is hoping to hear all your concerns about EU legislation first hand, as well as discuss rider training issues, the state of the retail bike industry and the future of the whole industry in light of various legislation, both proposed and under discussion for future proposal.

If you could arrive before 2pm (time enough to grab a cuppa) Mr Skinner will be available to take questions and hear what you have to say, after 2pm - It is common to visit an MP surgery and discuss local or national issues, but so much of what affects our motorcycling lives now is decided in Europe, this is a great opportunity for us to voice our concerns to an MEP who genuinely wants to understand riders and the bike industry generally. It should be an interesting afternoon, and remember, P&H is a multi-franchised dealer, so there'll be loads of bikes to look at too... 2.Events 2012

Just a reminder that a new events list for 2012 will be circulated in the next few weeks or, I think I have some great idea’s, but if you have something that you have in your mind like runs, functions etc that we as a club could consider adding to the events list then please let me know and I will let our runs leader and illustrious chairman and committee members know. I have updated the Surrey Tomcc website with dates that I have for the coming year, but please if you want to share your ideas for the club then it is essential that you disseminate them as soon as possible – email me at rayds@sky.com with you suggestions. My thanks to Tony Early for some great suggestions so far that have already been submitted to the Committee.

5.Wey Valley Institute of Advanced Motorcyclists

As you all may be aware I am a member of the IAM (& Rospa) and along with several other Surrey Tomcc members and usually attend the Wey Valley Institute of Advanced Motorcyclists Observed Sundays at Ripley Village Hall.. Do you want to come and see what it’s all about? Interested ? Curious? – well if so arrive between 09.15 and 09.30 and enjoy a very reasonably priced bacon sandwich and chat to one of our Observers. You can join on Sunday or you may prefer to take an assessment ride to get a feel of whether taking the IAM Test is for you. The ride will last about an hour and is usually on a 2:1 ratio with a Senior Observer. There will be a short briefing beforehand, and also debriefs during the ride and again at the end. We have a comprehensive system of direction giving and lost/stop procedures to avoid you having to worry about directions as well as riding. This format is very similar to our normal observed ride. If you want to come and look at us before joining please feel free. Alternatively make a note in your diary to attend one of our monthly open evenings, which will give you an idea of what the club is all about, and what we get up to. These are also held at Ripley Village Hall and start promptly at 20.00 (tea and biscuits are free though!) on the last Tuesday of every month except December.

Either way come and see us. You'll find we are as much a cross section of Motorcyclists as you would find anywhere at any motorcycle meet, no one that I know smokes a pipe, none of them wear slippers (at least not in the hall!) and only the Chief Observer has two heads ! You won't go away with a ticket for a small number plate either.
